Steam and hot-water boilers still heat the great majority of pre-war housing — the rowhouses and walk-ups of Brooklyn and western Queens, and the apartment buildings of the west Bronx. In many houses one boiler does double duty, serving both space heat and domestic hot water, which is why a no-heat call and a no-hot-water call so often turn out to be the same fault.
Furnaces and forced air belong to the detached housing out through eastern Queens and the east Bronx, where there is ductwork to feed. We install American Standard and Goodman equipment, and where a furnace is genuinely finished we price the replacement as one complete number.
Heat pumps and ductless heat cover everything else: the water-source units on building loops, and the ductless systems that heat the finished attics, rear extensions and converted basements no duct run or radiator ever reached.
Diagnosis before replacement
The most common heating complaint we get is not no heat at all — it is uneven heat. A top floor that overheats while a back room stays cold. On steam and hot-water systems that is a venting and distribution problem that has drifted over decades, not a capacity problem at the boiler. A new boiler will not fix it, and we will tell you so rather than quote you the larger job.
