Whether your house is a candidate
Three things decide it: somewhere to put an air handler, somewhere a condenser can properly sit, and a realistic route for duct.
That describes a great deal of Bayside, Whitestone and the surrounding blocks in Queens; Throggs Neck, Country Club, Pelham Bay, Morris Park and much of Riverdale in the Bronx; and the detached wood-frame houses through Victorian Flatbush and Ditmas Park along with a good share of the semi-detached brick in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park.
It does not describe an attached rowhouse with no basement of its own, and it does not describe an apartment. In those cases we will tell you so and talk about ductless or through-wall instead, which is a better outcome than an awkward central system installed to justify the visit.
The ductwork is the system
A well-chosen condenser on poor duct will still disappoint you. Leaky duct in an unconditioned basement or attic loses a substantial fraction of what it carries before the air ever reaches a room, and undersized returns will choke a correctly sized system into underperforming.
So the design work is genuinely about the distribution: duct sizing and layout, return paths, sealing, and insulation where runs pass through unconditioned space. In a house that already has ductwork, evaluating what is there is the first job rather than an afterthought — sometimes it is fine, sometimes it is the reason the previous system never worked well.
Sizing to the house, not the sales brochure
Oversized central air is the most common fault we find in existing installations. A system with too much capacity cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, shuts off, and never runs long enough to remove humidity. The house ends up cool and clammy, the equipment short cycles, and it wears out sooner for the privilege.
Proper sizing accounts for the house as it stands now — including the extension on the back and the finished attic that were not there when any previous system was specified.

One complete quote covering equipment, ductwork, electrical and commissioning, so the number you agree to is the number for the job. Estimates run Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Saturday mornings, and permits go through NYC DOB where a job needs them.
